The total cost of going from nowhere to riding is about $6,000, including a decent, brand new starter bike (cheaper, obviously, if you go the usual Craigslist route). That’s about the price of a Hyundai Accent or Nissan Sentra well off its warranty and in “fair” condition. How did I come to this conclusion? Through compiling all the typical start-up costs of riding, from learning how to the safety gear to keep your butt in one piece to how to keep your ride clean.
